December 13, 2006 - Hidden Treasure – Recycling Old Shelves

I'm always on the lookout for castoffs. Old shelves or bookcases which friends and neighbors (and even strangers) don't want anymore. Today was a day rich in undiscovered treasures.

I happened to notice a post on my local town email list from somebody who was giving away some old shelving. Anytime anyone gives anything away, it's spoken for within about two minutes. Sometimes less. It's a veritable frenzy of readers hungry for a bargain. This time I was the lucky winner. I'm quite sure there must have been dozens of people elbowing for a chance to take home some cruddy shelves.

My prize? Five wood shelves ready for makeovers. OK, so they're not in exactly the best shape. Perhaps they're even a little dirty. But they're perfect for me to practice my shelf overhaul techniques on. A lick of paint here, a varnish there, some decorative features stuck on with glue, and they'll be good as new.

If you're big on home improvement and short on cash, stay tuned to see my progress on the transformation-of-the-shelves and other goodies. While you're waiting for the next installment, why not take a look at everything you need to build your own shelves.
